Same Layer

Let’s return to the basics. First, why has hair cutting become an indispensable part of our daily lives? I believe, as many of you may agree, that the primary reason is to create a better appearance by shaping the head, which in turn gives the impression of health and intelligence to others. Of course, trends in society sometimes reflect the mood of the times and appear in different ways. One of the most notable examples occurred in the late 1970s in London with the punk fashion and the hairstyles that emerged from it. In response to the failed British government and the political climate, young people expressed anarchistic ideas through fashion, music, and hairstyles. In that case, it was considered cool to have a look that was more animalistic, deviating from the human form. However, excluding such exceptions, humans generally want to live healthily and vibrantly within society, look intelligent, and be well-regarded by others.

However, not everyone naturally has a perfectly shaped head when cut to the same length with clippers. To address this, hair styling techniques developed to correct these imperfections, and various design expressions evolved. Therefore, I believe that hairstyles such as the “Same-layer,” “pageboy,” and “very short” cuts represent the foundational styles. Once the corrections are made with these basic cuts, further hair designs are built upon them, allowing each design to be expressed in a more refined and beautiful way.

それでは原点に戻ってみましょう。まず、何故ヘアーカットが私たちの日常に必要不可欠になったのでしょうか？　皆さんも私と同じと思いますが、まず第一に、頭の形をよく見せる事で、健康でスマートな印象を他者に与えたい。と、いうのが原点なのだと思います。もちろん、巷に流行するトレンドは、時折その時節にある世界の空気を吸い込んで、それとは異なる現れ方をしたりもします。一番顕著に現れた時代は、1970年代後半にロンドンで起きたパンクファッションに派生したヘアースタイルだろうと思います。国政に失敗したイギリス政府に対して、アナーキー思想をぶつけ、若者たちはこぞって自分達の醜さをファッションや音楽、そしてヘアースタイルに表現しました。その場合、人間が人間の形よりももっと違った動物的な容姿をするのも、カッコイイ、ということになるのでしょう。そういった例外は除き、人間は集団生活の中で、人間らしく健康に生き生きと生きて、知的に見え、他人にもよく思われたいと思っています。しかしながら、皆が皆バリカンで一律同じ長さに切られた時に完璧な美しい頭の形をしているわけではありません。その補正を目的として、ヘアースタイリングの技術が発展していき、さまざまなデザイン表現が発展していきました。なので、私はこのセムレイヤー、ページーボーイ、ベリーショート。と呼ばれる髪型が、それぞれのヘアースタイルの原点であって、この補正し終えた形の上にその他のヘアーデザインを延長上に作りこむ事で、それぞれのデザインがより洗練された美しい形として表現されるのだと考えています。

セムレイヤーでの骨格補正カットの方法。

まず、２９Gridで紹介させて頂いた、骨格上のグリッドの図に戻ってみましょう。

Skeletal Correction Method using Same Layer

Now, let’s revisit the skeletal correction method using the same-layer cut, as introduced in the [29 GRID] diagram.

This grid is composed of horizontal sections measuring 2 inches and vertical sections measuring 4 centimeters (1 inch x 2 inches). Starting from the nape area, there are 4 sections, the second row (which includes the B-point) has 6 sections, and the third row, corresponding to the occipital bone, has 8 sections. This structure is similar to the 2×4 architectural grid introduced in Gaudí’s Art Deco buildings, where the curvature of the head is scanned by rectangular grid squares.

When I place a comb parallel to the center of one of these grid sections and measure the gaps at both ends, I find approximately a 5mm gap at each end. When I then place the comb at the edge of the next grid section, I notice a gap of about 1cm on the opposite side. Depending on whether this point is at the top or bottom of the section, the technique will either create layers (if it’s at the upper part) or a gradient (if it’s at the bottom edge).

I use this characteristic in the following way: if I want to add volume upwards, I place the comb at the bottom of the grid; if I want to create a more disheveled look, I place the comb at the top of the grid to establish the guide. If I don’t want to change the length, I keep the comb at the center and parallel to the cutting line. Repeating this process twice results in a length difference that doubles, so I can adjust the gap according to the desired shape of the skull.

This is where my skeletal correction method began. Of course, there are times when the gap is larger than expected. In such cases, I use layering or elevation techniques to compensate. However, in most cases, the ideal head shape and the distorted areas typically stay within 1 to 2 centimeters, unless there are exceptional circumstances. This vertical skeletal correction method has been extremely useful for fundamental of my work.

Since it may be difficult to fully understand just through explanation, I will provide a diagram to illustrate this pattern of work in the next session.

このグリッドは横２セインチと縦４センチ（1 inch X ２inch)で構成され、ネープエリアから４つ、Bポイントを含む二段目が６つ、その上のオキシタルボーンの列が８つ。と、ガウディーのアール・デコ建築で登場した２X４形式の建築尺のように構成され頭の丸みを長方形のマス目がスキャンニングしています。僕がその一つのマス目の中央にコームを並行になるように当てた時に両端にできる隙間を計測した所、両端に約５ミリ程度の隙間ができるます。そのマス内の隙間は、次にマス目の端っこ側にコームを置いたときに反対側は一センチ程度の隙間が空き、そのポイントが増すの上部であればテクニークはレイヤーに、下部のエッジであればグラデーション側に構成される事になります。僕はこの特性を使って、その上に向けて膨らませたい場合はグリッド下部にコームを置き、下に崩したければグリッド上部にコームを置きガイドを作る。長さを変えたくなければ、中央に置きカット面に対して並行にする。その作業を2回同じく繰り返せば倍の長さの差が生じるので、あおうする事だ、欲しいだけの長さのギャップを整えたい骨格の形状に合わせて行う。という作業から僕の骨格補正は始まりました。もちろん、思いのほかギャップが大きい場合があります。その時にはレイヤーやエレベーション等をを使って対処しますが、人間の理想的な頭の形とそれに対して歪んだ部分というのは、よほどのことがない限り、精々１から二センチ程度で収まるケースが多いので。この縦方向に対しての骨格補正メソッドはとっても重宝しました。

説明だけでは分かりにくいかも知れないので、次の回で少しこの作業パターンを図解で説明させて頂くことにしましょう。
