こんにちは皆さん、ブログにたどり着いた皆さん。私は2005年に渡米して、アメリカはサンディエゴの美容室BB Meme Salonを開業、現在二店舗のオーナであり、ヘアスタイリスト、そしてプロフォトグラファー日々活躍中です。このブログでは、私のヘアーデザインのアイデア「Less Distorted Hair Designing」を、「骨格構造と毛流れ補正法」を使って説明していきます。

Previously, I discussed the concept of Sassoon’s haircut as a “two-pillar structure” in the [31 Square Shape] episode. Afterward, I realized that with the two pillars set on either side in a long rectangular shape, the curvature of the head causes the length to gradually remain toward the edges, eventually those become distorted and produce unwanted hair flow. This could potentially cause the structure to collapse if the corners are not properly processed. Furthermore, the weight remains toward the back of the ear, increasing the hair volume, and the natural flow of hair, which tends to avoid the ear, causes hair to accumulate around the back of the ear. This is why clients often feel the thickness and weight behind their ears. Additionally, the hair from the crown of the head that falls down will gather and close up the expanded shape around this area. When classic layers are used to trim it from above, it is inevitable that the client will feel the thickness behind the ear.

For those with a fine, Anglo-Saxon bone structure who want to expand horizontally, this basic technique was very useful. However, for individuals with characteristics such as flat or protruding skulls, it tends to exaggerate those features, further increasing the feeling of weight and thickness behind the ear, as well as under the occipital bone.

At this point, I would like to suggest something to you. How about considering the shape’s thickness and hair volume separately? Since we have studied the forces that each shape can exert, I think you’ve already realized this. The weight of a triangle flows toward the narrow, pointed angle. A square placed on a flat plane typically flows downward, stabilizing as it moves. The center of a circle stays in the middle, making it more flexible and able to move in all directions. Of course, hair is a suspended object, and its shape and volume vary depending on the curve of each part of the head. When we talk about “shape” in hair design, we’re mainly referring to the shape formed on the surface, not necessarily the overall volume shape. However, when we consider the head and hair as a whole, if we do not account for the internal density of the object, the circle remains a circle, the triangle remains a triangle, and the square remains a square. This realization led me to consider the volume of shape and the thickness of hair as separate concepts.

By doing this, we can avoid collecting too much hair volume in areas where thickness is desired, which could otherwise make clients uncomfortable, or limiting the shape and preventing variety just because we want to add more volume. Additionally, if there is a cutting technique that can add thickness to the form while reducing density, we can use thinning shears or razors to enhance the structure we’ve created without breaking it, allowing us to fully leverage its power when styling.

The key to controlling the thickness and volume separately is the concept of the [Joist]. This refers to the structural beams. By effectively using this concept, we can strengthen the structure while opening up space. During the hairstyling process, it allows us to create a light texture while adding width, or increase thickness without adding too much weight. These controls can be achieved through the haircut itself, even before we start using styling products. I believe this is the ultimate haircut we can offer our clients. The starting point for traditional hair styling with a blow dryer and brush was to create volume with a soft texture. However, because “weight” and “hair volume” became the main concepts of volume in haircuts, we are constantly faced with the challenge of how to finish areas with weight and thickness in a lighter way.

Of course, in hairdressing, the size of the shape is certainly related to the length of the hair. Like the beam structure in architecture, there must be a way to create width while opening up space. With this idea in mind, I have long sought a haircut shape that fits best with the “Pillar system” and “Joist system” that are most compatible with the bone structure, under the concept of Less Distorted Hair Design. And I have discovered one of the most effective shapes. This shape has advantages for weight control, width control, volume control, hair flow control, lift, and expansion. Yet, this shape is rarely seen in architectural theory. This is because the shape itself lacks stability and is unsuitable for use in ground-based structures. However, when arranged in a suspended manner, it provides more stability with flexibility than a rectangular arrangement and is most effective in a hairdressing structure. Moreover, this shape fits the organic division of the head’s natural lines, without distortion, rather than aligning with the mechanical division lines of the skeleton. This shape is what I referred to as the “Kumano brush shape” in the 41st episode.

以前Sasoonヘアーカットは二本柱のストラクチャーである。というお話を[31 Square Shape]の回でお話ししました。その後、私は長四角の柱を両側に設置する二本柱では、頭の丸みの影響を受けて、両端に向けて徐々に長さが残ってしまい、レイヤーに触れてしまう為、歪みの原因になるばかりか、意図しない毛流れを引き起こします。コーナーの処理をきちっとしておかないとぞこから構造が崩れてしまう可能性を示唆しました。また、そのレイヤー部分は耳後ろに向かってウエートが残って毛量も増す上に、人の髪は耳を境に耳を避けるように耳後ろに髪の毛が流れ込んできます。これが、お客様がいつもいつも訝しがっている耳後ろの厚みや重みの原因でもあります。そればかりか、耳後ろには鉢の貼った部分から一度、開きながら落ちてくる髪もこの辺りでその広がった形を閉じながら集まってきます。それを上からのレイヤーで削り取るクラッシックレイヤーでは、お客様が耳後ろに厚みを感じるのは必然なのです。アグロサクソン系の細身の骨格で横に膨らませたいというニーズであれば、このベーシックは大変重宝しました。しかしながら、はち張り絶壁などの特徴のある骨格には、それを誇張してしまうだけで無く、耳後ろの毛量やオキシタルボーン下への厚みや重みの感じ方もかなり増加します。

ここで、皆さんに一つ提案があるのですが。ひとまず形の厚みと毛量を別々に分けて考えてみませんか？　ここまで折角形が持つそれぞれの力戦を勉強して来たのですから、そろそろお気づきとは思いますが。三角のウエートはより狭い角度を持ったとんがり部分に向かって流れ込んでいきます。平面に置かれている四角は通常全体に下方向に流れて安定します。丸の重心は中心に止まりあらゆる方向に動きやすくなります。もちろん、髪は吊るされた物体であり、それぞれの形も頭のパーツの曲線の各所でその形、ボリュームともに一定ではありません。ヘアーデザイニングで言うところのシェイプというのは、主に表面にできる形を指しているのであって、ボリューム全体の形を示唆するものではないのが事実です。ただ、頭とヘアーをひっくるめて考えた時にその物体の内部の密度さへ考慮しなければ、丸は丸で、三角は三角。四角も然りです。この事が実は私に形のボリュームと髪の厚みをそれぞれ分けて考えるキッカケを与えてくれたんです。そうすれば、厚みを求めるがゆえに毛量をそこへ集めて来て、お客さまに不快な思いをさせたり、毛量を出したいがために、形を限定してバリエーションを組めなかったり、という事がかなり改善されるのです。また、フォルムの厚みを与えながら密度を少なくするカット技法があれば、削ぎバサミやレザーを使って折角作った構造を壊す事なく、フルにその力戦を生かしスタイリングできます。

この毛量と厚みをそれぞれ分けてコントロールする時その鍵となるのが [Joist]というコンセプトです。いわゆる構造上の梁です。このコンセプトを駆使すれば、空間を開けながら構造を強化できるので、ヘアースタイリングのプロセスの中で、横幅を出しながら軽い質感を作る。形の厚みを増しながらも重さを出しすぎない。などのコントロールがスタイリング剤の手助けを借りる以前にヘアーカットである程度作り込むことが可能になるのです。私は、これこそがお客様に提供する究極のヘアーカットだと考えています。フワッとした質感を持ってボリュームを作り込む。というのが本来のドライヤーとブラシワークでのヘアースタイリングのスターティングポイントでした。しかしながら、”ウエートをためる”　”毛量を集めてくる”事がヘアーカットのボリュームの概念である為、私たちは絶えず、この重さを持った厚みのある部分をいかに軽く仕上げるか？という相反する作業を強いられるようになったのです。もちろん、ヘアードレッシングにおいて、形の大きさは髪の長さと相互関係にあるのは確かです。この建築分野にあるような梁の構造に見られるように、空間を開けながら幅を出す方法はきっとあるはず。と、いう思いで、Less Distorted Hair Design のコンセプトの元、私は骨格に最もフィットするPiller systemとJoist system に最適なヘアーカットで使用できる形というのもを長きに渡って探して来ました。そして、一つの最も有効な形を発見したのです。この形はウエートコントロール、幅のコントロール、量感コントロール、毛流れのコントロール、リフト、エキスパンションのあらゆる利点を持ちながら、建築構造理論においては中々お目見えしない形なのです。何故なら、この形自体は非常に安定性に乏しく、地面に建てる構造に使用するには向きません。しかしながら、吊るすという配置方法においては長方形を配置するよりも安定性と柔軟性を発揮し、ヘアードレッシング構造に最も有効活用できるのです。しかもその形は骨格上の操作利便上の分割線にでは無く、オーガニックな形の分割ディビジョンにディストーション無しにフィットしてくれるのです。それが41でお話しした熊野筆の形でした。
