こんにちは皆さん、ブログにたどり着いた皆さん。私は2005年に渡米して、アメリカはサンディエゴの美容室BB Meme Salonを開業、現在二店舗のオーナであり、ヘアスタイリスト、そしてプロフォトグラファー日々活躍中です。このブログでは、私のヘアーデザインのアイデア「Less Distorted Hair Designing」を、「骨格構造と毛流れ補正法」を使って説明していきます。

Force Vector in the Kumano Brush

Anyone who has ever held a Japanese calligraphy brush and written with it has likely experienced the firmness of that fine brush tip. It feels like the tip of a twisted spring, sharp and pointed. The spring-like return is also very flexible, and when pressed sideways, the brush spreads, allowing you to write thick characters. Have you ever wondered where that flexibility comes from? Of course, we can’t ignore the natural pliability of the material itself. However, without the unique shape of the brush, it wouldn’t have that level of firmness. So, what exactly is going on inside the brush?

和筆を手に取って、書を書いたことがある事がある方なら誰でも経験していらっしゃると思いますが、あの細い筆先のコシです。まるで捻れるバネの先っぽがトンがっているって感じ。その戻りもかなりしなやかで、横に押さえつければ広がりを持って、太い文字が書けます。そのしなやかさは　一体どこから来るのだろう？って考えた事はありますか？勿論、素材そのものが持つしなりというのも否めません。しかしながら、筆のその形状を無くしては、やはりあそこまでのコシを得る事はできないでしょう。では、筆の中は一体どうなっているのでしょうか？

The brush is made by mixing hairs of different lengths, so its structure becomes less dense towards the tip. When bundled together, it tapers off towards the end. What’s important here is that this triangular cone is not hollow; rather, it becomes denser as it goes upward. With that in mind, let’s draw the force lines that exist within this shape.

筆はそれぞれ違った長さの毛が混ぜてあ流ので毛先に向かって密度が薄くなる構造になっています。それが束ねられた時に先に向かって細くなっていく。ここで重要なのは、この三角錐の中は空洞では無く、上に行くに従って密度の大きい物体なのです。それではその条件でこの形の中に存在する力線を書いてみます。

A cone is a shape characterized by a circular cross-section and triangular profile, so it contains force lines of both shapes. A brush is a tool used in an inverted state of this form. As a mass of material, it becomes denser and heavier towards the top. However, the triangular force lines channel energy towards the downward-pointing apex. Meanwhile, the circular cross-sections along the way contain outward-expanding force lines radiating from the center. When these two force lines combine, they transform into a tornado-like force, spiraling energy downward. Tornadoes narrow towards the ground and possess their greatest destructive power near the base.

円錐は切り口が丸い三角形という特徴を持った形なので、その両方の力線の特徴を持っています。筆というのはその形が逆さになった状態で使用される道具なのです。物質の質量としては上に行くほど密度が高く、重量も重い。しかしながら、三角形の頂点に向かう力線が下方向の頂点へ向けてそのエネルギーを伝えています。その間ずっと、丸い断面のどの部分もが円形に見られる中心から外へ向かう膨張型の力線を内包しているため、その二つの力線を合わせると、まるでそれは螺旋にエネルギーを下に伝える竜巻のような力線に変化します。竜巻は地上に近い所ほど薪が細くなり、最大の破壊力を持ちます。

In my early thirties, a television cameraman once gave me some tough but encouraging advice: “When an architect, painter, fashion designer, and photographer sit down at the same table to talk, you hairstylists are the ones who lack the most in terms of theoretical discussion.” Ever since, I have been exploring force lines hidden within shapes and searching for hints in the fields of painting, photography composition, architecture, chemistry, and physics that could inform our work as hairstylists.

While my findings may be fragmentary, I’ve now reached a point where I can confidently approach my work, even in the face of difficult challenges like varying hair textures, growth patterns, or skeletal irregularities, without blaming the client’s natural traits. Although it’s been a solitary journey, this project, with its still untapped potential, makes my daily work incredibly exciting.

For those who may still doubt the idea of energy residing within hair, starting with Chapter 43, I’d like to delve a little deeper into this concept of energy.

私は、３０代の初めに一人のテレビカメラマンから「建築家、画家、服飾デザイナー、写真家が一つのテーブルに着いて話をする機会を持った時、あなた方が一番理論を論ずるものを持ち合わせて無いのですよ。」と、叱咤激励を受けて以来、このような形の中に潜む力線や、そしてまた、絵画、写真の構図、建築学、化学、物理学の中で自分達の美容師としての仕事にヒントになる事は無いだろうか？と探求し続けています。断片的であるかもしれませんが、現在、そのかいあって、様々な髪質や生えグセ、骨格の歪みなどの困難な場合でも、お客様の髪質やクセ、顔形のせいにする事なく、要望応えるべく仕事に慢心できるようになりました。孤独な旅ではありますが、まだまだ伸びしろのあるこのプロジェクトは、私の日々の仕事をとてもエキサイティングなものにしてくれてます。

この髪の中に潜むエネルギーという部分は疑わしい、と思っていらっしゃる方も多いかもしれないので、次回43章から少し、このエネルギーについてのお話をしていきたいと思います。
