 Force Vector & Shapes

I love Chicago, with its stunning modernist skyscrapers. Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs are so distinctive that you can recognize them without a guidebook. In the architectural world, three basic shapes serve as foundational elements in design and beyond. Sassoon was the first to adopt the square shape in our workflow, which has long been a cornerstone of hair design, as I mentioned in Chapter 31. However, it’s essential to recognize that the round shape may be considered the original form used in hairdressing methods for the longest time in our industry.

The triangular shape was later introduced, leading to the creation of the [Nancy Kwans chic bob] 1968. Eventually, the round shape was refined by Trevor Sorbie and presented as a geometric haircut lineup known as [Fire Fly] 1974. These fundamental haircut styles provide critical material for understanding basic haircut concepts.

While we understand how these shapes influence the movement of hair during cutting, we often overlook the role of force vectors. Additionally, the launch angle significantly affects how hair behaves in response to these shapes. I will explore the concept of launch angles later, but first, it’s crucial to review the force vectors associated with these shapes to better understand the dynamics influenced by hair growth patterns.

I was standing in the middle of Millennium Park in Chicago, fascinated by how all three basic shapes coexisted in one space. It has become a habit for me to visualize force vectors in this way to understand how these objects interact with the ground.

 Round Shape

The round shape is supported by “surface tension,” with force emanating from the center outward. A perfect sphere exerts the strongest power for a given material consistency. You can imagine how a bubble can float in the air or rest on an obstacle; it’s simply a liquid. However, a perfect round shape requires assistance from other shapes to settle on a flat surface—it is designed to expand, not to stabilize. In hair design, this shape is invaluable for creating flow towards the back or adding volume.

Square Shape

The square shape grounds everything. No organic structure can exist without this foundational shape. The center of gravity is lowered to enhance flexibility and stability. Sassoon employed the square shape in his early work, utilizing it to accommodate the rounded shape of the head. The expansion force generated by the roundness of the head is converted into a flat square form, functioning like a spring beneath the weight of hair. He effectively built an arched bridge on our heads.

Triangular Shape

The triangular shape features three pointed corners. In an equilateral triangle, force can be directed equally toward any angle. If the triangle is a right triangle, with the right angle at the bottom, the vertical line acts as a pillar, and the force vector moves toward the narrower angle. This shape is particularly useful for directing hair in a specific direction. I’ve explored how to create this shape using grids and over-direction, and I look forward to sharing more about this process in future posts.

Through this study, I’ve discovered how we can manipulate hair on our heads—moving, stopping, lifting, and pushing it down—using geometric shapes, much like a vehicle’s acceleration and braking systems. I’m especially excited to explore the triangular shape with its various angles, as well as the parabolic forms created by multiple angles. This approach promises to be a fun and innovative way to create dynamic hairstyles

ラウンドシェイプ

丸い形状は「表面張力」によって支えられ、力は中心から外へと放射されます。完璧な球体は、特定の素材の一貫性に対して最も強い力を発揮します。シャボン玉が空中に浮かんだり、障害物の上に乗ったりする様子を想像してみてください。それは単なる液体です。しかし、完璧な丸い形状は平らな面に安定して置かれるために他の形状の助けが必要です—それは拡張するために設計されており、安定させるためではありません。ヘアデザインにおいて、この形状は後ろへの流れを作り出したり、ボリュームを追加したりするのに非常に貴重です。

スクエアーシェイプ

四角形はとっても安定しています。この基礎的な形状が内包されなければ、有機的な構造も存在できません。重心が下がることで、柔軟性と安定性が向上します。サスーンは彼の初期の作品で四角形を取り入れ、頭の丸みを考慮してそれを活用しました。頭の丸みから生じる拡張力は、平らな四角形の形に変換され、髪の重さの下でバネのように機能します。彼は効果的に私たちの頭の上にアーチ型の橋を築きました。

トライアンギュラーシェオプ

三角形は三つの尖った角を持っています。正三角形では、力はどの角にも均等に向けられます。もし三角形が直角三角形で、角が底にある場合、垂直線は柱のように機能し、力のベクトルは狭い角に向かいます。この形状は、髪を特定の方向に導くのに特に役立ちます。私はグリッドやオーバーダイレクションを使ってこの形状を作る方法を探求しました。今後の投稿でこのプロセスについてもっと共有できることを楽しみにしています。

この研究を通じて、私たちは幾何学的な形状を用いて、頭上の髪を動かしたり、止めたり、持ち上げたり、押し下げたりできることを発見しました。これは車両の加速とブレーキシステムのようなものです。特に、さまざまな角度を持つ三角形の形状や、複数の傾きによって作られる放物線的な形状を探求することにワクワクしています。このアプローチは、ダイナミックなヘアスタイルを創造するための楽しく革新的な方法になると期待しています。
