こんにちは皆さん、ブログにたどり着いた皆さん。私は2005年に渡米して、アメリカはサンディエゴの美容室BB Meme Salonを開業、現在二店舗のオーナであり、ヘアスタイリスト、そしてプロフォトグラファー日々活躍中です。このブログでは、私のヘアーデザインのアイデア「Less Distorted Hair Designing」を、「骨格構造と毛流れ補正法」を使って説明していきます。
Square Shape
Previously, the chapter on [2 MOUGL] and hairstyles’ silhouettes are influenced by the shape of our skulls. As described in [18 Like a River Flow], the flow of hair is influenced by how the under-layer flows and interacts with the roots, causing the upper layers to be pulled in a direction different from the desired flow on the surface. This characteristic often becomes evident from birth and is more pronounced as the hair thickens during growth and changes during puberty, significantly affecting the overall hairstyle. On the other hand, the dip at the nape of the neck can become smoother with muscle development, which can soften the irregularities in areas like the occipital bones as the muscles firm up over time. However, bone shape typically changes less with growth compared to facial changes. Additionally, variations in hair flow due to parting habits or the effects of wearing hats or helmets can occur. Regardless, what we, as hairstylists, can do in each situation is to assess the current state and provide the necessary treatment.
Vidal Sassoon addressed this issue with his effective technique called Square Shape. My journey into exploring Less Distorted Hair Designing began with questioning why this shape freed women from hairspray, made households discard those large dryers, and eliminated women wandering the neighborhood with curlers. As a young hairstylist caught in the midst of the cutting craze, I was unable to offer this to my clients at the time.
以前チャプター[2 MOUGL]でヘアースタイルのシルエットは私たちの頭骨の形に影響すると描きました。そして、[１８Like a river flow]で書いたように, 毛流れは、アンダーレイヤーの流れが直接接触している髪に伝わり、下層の根元の生えている方向に上層部が引っ張られる形で毛束が動き、表面の毛流れ方向とは違った動きをする事をお話ししました。これは既に私たちが生まれた時からそのキャラクターが顕著に表れている場合が多く、成長過程で髪の毛の太さが太くなり、思春期近くなると髪質が変化することによって、その内容はヘアースタイル全体により大きく影響を与える事になります。一方、首筋の窪みについては筋肉の発達によりハリが出てきますので、骨格が途切れているoccipital bones下などは、成長する過程で筋肉にハリが出てくると、凸凹が和らいで来る事例も多々ありますが、骨の形と言うのは顔の変化に反して成長の影響を受けにくいのが通常です。分け目による毛流れの変化や、帽子やヘルメットを被るために起こる毛流れの影響もありますが、どちらにしても、私たち美容師がその都度のお客様の対応において出来ることは、現状を把握して必要な処置をすると言うことに過ぎません。
この事をVidal SassoonはSquare Shape という効果的な技法で対処しようとしました。僕のLess Distorted Hair Designingの探究の旅は、何故この形が女性をヘアースプレーから解放し、各家庭からあの大きなドライヤーを破棄させ、カーラーを巻いて近所を徘徊する女性たちを消し去ったのか？というところから始まりました。まだ若い美容師だった僕が削ぎのカットのブームの渦中にいて、それをお客様に提供できないでいたからです。
It wasn’t until ten years later that I recognized the usefulness of the Square Shape within the 12 Basics of PEAK-A-BOO. At the time, I was deeply immersed in studying the history of hairstyles and architectural books to meet clients’ demands for hairstyles that would stay perfectly set with just a blow dryer. The answer I eventually arrived at was this:
Sassoon’s hair architecture is built on two pillars!
Just as the Corvette of that era introduced a design inspired by rockets, Sassoon must have been inspired by the Art Deco architecture of the Empire State Building, the tallest building in the world at the time. In the design shown in the photo, there are static panels with about twice the density and thickness compared to the relatively shorter lengths cut from the hairline to the nape corner. The design features an arched support extending from the second point downward to the nape corner, preventing lateral distortion. The center section, situated between the occipital bone and the second point, consists of relatively short lengths within the square shape, and this functions as the main pillar, much like the central beam of a house.Even at the longest parts, a triangular support structure near the golden point extends to the front edge, with its base aligned with the curvature of the cheekbone. The cut is finished with a supportive structure following this curve. At that time, one challenge I faced was the corner behind the crown. This occurred because the Square Shape tries to remain in place, where the Triangular Shape tends to move toward a specific point. If I had applied a convex layer following the head’s curve in that area, I could have prevented the depressions at the back and sides. After moving to America, I spent my days experimenting and reflecting freely with the hip kids of downtown
私がPEAK-A-BOOの１２Basicsの中にあったスクエアシェイプの有用性に気づいたのもそのずっと先、１０年も後の話でした。当時、どうしてもお客様のドライヤーだけで乾かしてすぐきまるヘアースタイルが欲しいという要望に応える為に、本腰を入れてヘアースタイルの歴史や建築の本などを読み漁っている時にやっと行き着いた答えはこうでした。
Sassoonは二柱構造のヘアー建築だ！
丁度その頃のCORVETTEがロケットをモチーフにしたデザインを発表していたように、Sassoonも世界で一番高かったエンパイヤーステイトビルの骨格構造となっているArt Decoの建築を真似たに違いないのです。この上の写真のデザインの中には耳後ろのポイントからネープコーナーにかけて、生え際から比較的短いレングスで切られているセンターラインよりも約二倍の密度と厚みを持った動かないパネルの集合体があります。セカンドポイントから斜め下方向ネープコーナーに向けてはアーチ状のハリ構造があって、横への歪みを防ぐ役割を担っています。センターはオキシシタルボーンからセカンドポイントの間にスクエアーシェイプ中の比較的短いレングスで構成される部分が存在していて、これが家屋で言う大黒柱の役割を果たしています。一番長い部分においてもゴールデンポイント付近からフロントのエッジにかけて三角構造のハリが構築されていて、その下辺は頬骨の骨格に沿っていていて、その丸みの上に足場を設ける形でカットを仕上げました。この当時、僕が一箇所処理を滞っていたのはハチ後ろにあるコーナーで、これはスクエアーシェイプがその場に止まろうとするのに反して、トライアンギュラーシェイプは一点に向かって動こうとする性質があるが故に起こります。その間に頭の丸みに沿ったコンベックスレイヤーを施して、仕上げていればバックとサイドの陥没を防げていたでしょう。こんな風に、アメリカに移住してからの僕はダウンタウンのHipなKIDS達を相手に自由に実験と考察を繰り返す日々を送っていました。
In any case, since the head is a container for the brain, it cannot have internal pillars but consists of an arch-like structure. The force of this arch structure spreads outward, so the hair on top typically aligns with this expansion. In other words, the spreading of the hair is inevitable. Sassoon’s discovery of how to control this with the Square Shape structure, thus freeing women from rigid hairspray, makes him as significant as Coco Chanel, who liberated women from corsets with her boxy designs.
どちらにしても、頭は脳の器であるから、中に柱を立てる事ができない代わりにアーチ構造の塊なのです。アーチ構造の力戦は外へ外へ広がっていく力戦を描くので、その上に乗っかる髪は通常その力戦の拡張線状にあります。つまり、髪が広がってしまうのは必然なんです。それをこのスクエア〜シェイプという構造でコントロールする事を発見し、世の中の女性をガチガチのヘアースプレーから解放したSASSOONはやはり、ボックスシェイプの上着でコルセットに苦しめられる女性を解放したココシャネルと同様偉大なのです。
