Hi everyone who came to read this blog written by Koji Kuninaga. I am a hair stylist / Beauty Salon Owner of BB Meme Salon・Photographer in San Diego US. In this blog, I will explain my idea of hair designing [Less distorted hairdesigning] using [Bone Structure and Hair Flow Corrective Method]
Mogul
For five years, I struggled as an assistant stylist due to a severe skin allergy. I relied on steroids, but eventually, they stopped working. At one point, my skin was so damaged it was almost fluid, and I couldn’t stop the liquids and pus from seeping out. I decided to stop using medication and began exploring natural treatments like garlic baths, Chinese herbs, carbon electric spark therapy, and Pi water. After trying so many things, I realized I couldn’t fully trust dermatologists. This made me reflect on how miracles it is that our bodies hold together at all.
Our skin’s neutral balance, created by the positive and negative charges. Stability of state plays a critical role in its health. Acidic substances can burn our skin, while alkaline substances can cause it to deteriorate. I learned that chemical burns differ depending on whether they are caused by acid or alkaline substances. After this long battle, my skin finally began to heal, and I could even bend my fingers again.
One crucial lesson I learned from this experience is the importance of our skin’s barrier system and scalp follicles. The barrier zone on our skin exists due to differences in the electric field, making it essential to wash your hands after touching any chemicals. This experience reminded me that preventing problems can be simple, like washing your hands, even though our skin operates in such a complex and systematic way. It taught me to study things more deeply and find the simple fixes, and now, that has become a habit of mine.
I love going to the mountains for snowboarding. Once, I visited a snow resort for sightseeing in the heat of summer. The smell of the woods, the cold breeze coming through the trees, and inhaling the fresh air while imagining the snow-covered summit were unforgettable. Riding the lift wasn’t bad either—it offered a different experience compared to winter. I was particularly intrigued by how the courses differ between seasons. The winding course was actually a paved road, and I could see bulldozer claw marks on the steep, sliding surfaces.
The most interesting thing I encountered was the mogul course. I was surprised to learn how it was made! Looking down at the exposed ground, I noticed that large, round stones, with all their corners completely shaved off, were laid out at equal distances from each other in a diagonal pattern.
Then something clicked in my mind. Wait a minute—could this be the reason why hair shapes turn out differently when I apply the same haircut pattern to each client? If these rocks design the mogul course after the snow covers them, then the same principle might apply to the head shape beneath the hair. Bumps will result in raised areas, and dents will result in compression.
This realization made me think about how the underlying shape of our heads can distort the design and affect the volume in different parts. Just as I understand how my snowboard behaves when pulled by gravity, I began to grasp how hair flow is influenced by what lies beneath the hair. But my question was, how do you explain the length of the hair shaft? It’s also a crucial factor in our hair shape.
Anyway, it seems that the distortion, volume differences, and density variations caused by hair flow and head shape are more complex than I initially thought. I had been trying to address these issues only with thinning scissors or a razor in my hair design. But there must be simple way to take care of these mutters.
