Understanding the Domino Effect in Over-Direction

Over-direction in hair design involves intentionally moving the hair away from its natural fall to create volume and shape. However, a single over-direction action can create a noticeable gap, like a half-inch difference between the current panel length and the previous one. For instance, closing the length gap between the nape corner and the back of the ear often requires three to four carefully measured actions, especially in shorter haircuts with approximately one-inch sections. Longer hair needs even more precise adjustments to maintain a level appearance.

When people hear “Domino Effect,” they often think of the compressed energy transmission from one object to the next. However, in hair cutting, over-direction works differently: it leaves length longer toward the direction you are moving on the head shape. When a shorter panel pushes against a longer one, the force amplifies the volume in the hairstyle.

Interestingly, most hair strands hang from our head, naturally pulled down by gravity and settling where the X, Y, and Z axes balance. This settlement point becomes a crucial angle in our hair design, influencing how the style appears and behaves. To master this, I meticulously examined how different types of over-direction create various angle settlements, which significantly impacted my targeted workflow. This approach not only helped achieve the desired design but also inspired me to think about how hair moves in the wind and how it settles once the wind stops.

ヘアデザインにおけるオーバーダイレクションは、髪が自然に落ちる方向から意図的に動かしてボリュームと形を作り出す技術です。しかし、単一のオーバーダイレクション操作では、現在のパネルの長さと前のパネルの長さとの間に半インチの差のような目立つギャップが生じることがあります。たとえば、うなじの角と耳の後ろの間の長さのギャップを閉じるには、特に約1インチのセクションの短い髪型では、3〜4回の慎重に測定されたアクションが必要です。長い髪の場合、レベルを保つためにはさらに正確な調整が必要です。

Architectural Insights and Hair Design: A Surprising Connection

During this exploration, I was unexpectedly tasked with translating a manual for assembling a log house. My salon’s owner wanted to venture into a log house business in Japan, which required navigating complex architectural regulations. Although this was outside my usual duties, I understood the underlying lesson: mastering such processes could help me survive as a hair stylist in the U.S. I embraced the challenge, knowing it would broaden my skills.

I invested in an architectural design dictionary from Kinokuniya, the largest bookstore in town, spending $30 fueled by pure curiosity. The manual introduced me to fundamental architectural concepts like pillars, trusses, beams, and arch structures. I learned that major structures are built around a secure core, such as a pillar, which supports and stabilizes the entire construction before any force-transmitting elements are added.

These principles made me question popular hair design methods, like the Two Sectioning Disconnected Haircut Method by Fumikazu Kimura of Fiber Zoom, which gained traction across Japan. His approach didn’t include a structural “pillar,” relying instead on movement around the head shape. This might work for many clients, but given that hair hangs from the head like a suspended structure, a foundational understanding of how to build from a secure base seemed essential.

この探求の過程で、私は予期せずログハウスの組立マニュアルの翻訳を任されました。私のサロンのオーナーが日本でログハウスビジネスに乗り出そうとしており、複雑な建築規制をクリアする必要がありました。これは私の通常の職務範囲を超えていましたが、その根底にある教訓を理解しました。それは、こうしたプロセスを習得することで、アメリカでヘアスタイリストとして生き残るためのスキルを広げられるかもしれないと思ったのです。私はこの挑戦を受け入れました。

私は町の大型書店である紀伊國屋で、建築デザイン辞典を購入しました。好奇心から30ドルを投資しました。このマニュアルでは、柱、トラス、梁、アーチ構造などの基本的な建築概念を紹介されました。主要な構造物は、力を伝達する要素が追加される前に、柱などの安定したコアを中心に構築され、そのコアが全体の建設を支え、安定させることを学びました。

これらの原則は、人気のあるヘアデザインメソッドに疑問を抱かせました。たとえば、Fumikazu Kimura（ファイバーズーム）の「ツーセクション・ディスコネクテッド・ヘアカット・メソッド」は、日本全体で注目を集めました。彼のアプローチには構造的な「柱」が含まれておらず、代わりに頭の形状に沿った動きに依存しています。多くのクライアントにはうまくいくかもしれませんが、髪が頭から吊り下げられた構造のように垂れていることを考えると、強固な基盤からの構築に関する基礎的な理解が重要であると感じました。

This unexpected detour into architecture provided valuable insights that directly influenced my approach to hair design. Understanding how structures are stabilized and balanced before force is transmitted guided me to rethink my cutting methods. Just as buildings require a strong foundation to manage forces, effective hair design needs a structural basis to control movement, volume, and shape.

These studies were crucial in shaping my techniques and philosophy, blending the precision of engineering with the artistry of hairstyling, ultimately enriching my journey toward mastering my craft.

この建築の予期しない寄り道は、私のヘアデザインへのアプローチに直接的な影響を与える貴重な洞察を提供しました。構造が安定し、バランスを保つためには、力が伝達される前に基盤がしっかりしている必要があることを理解しました。そのおかげで時流に流されず、カット方法を再考することができました。建物が力を管理するために強固な基礎を必要とするのと同様に、効果的なヘアデザインも動き、ボリューム、形状をコントロールするための構造的基礎が必要です。

これらの研究は、私の技術と哲学を形成する上で重要な役割を果たし、工学の精密さとヘアスタイリングの芸術性を融合させる、私の技術習得の旅をもっとエキサイティングなのにしてくれました。
