Understanding the Layers and Flow of Hair Movement

Just like water flowing over rocks and through turbulent areas, our hair operates in multiple layers, each influencing the other:

1. Surface Layer: This is the topmost layer of hair that’s visible and most directly affected by the environment, styling products, and heat tools. It’s akin to the water surface, constantly in motion, easily disturbed by the wind, and often pulled by the layer underneath.
2. Mid Layer: The mid layer acts like the secondary flow of water that tries to follow the main current but is influenced by what’s happening beneath and above. It attempts to maintain order but is often redirected or blocked by the bottom layer’s disturbances. This layer in hair contributes to overall volume and movement but is less immediately noticeable than the surface.
3. Bottom Layer (Rock Bottom): This is the foundation layer, analogous to water flowing over the rocks at the bottom of a river. It’s the most chaotic, filled with irregularities, twists, turns, and blockages that affect the flow of everything above it. This layer includes hair that grows at odd angles, cowlicks, and denser sections that often dictate the behavior of the layers above.

Challenges in Hair Movement

1. Bulk Accumulation: Just as rocks create turbulence and block the flow of water, certain dense areas of hair act as obstacles, accumulating bulk and disrupting the desired movement. This often manifests as those frustrating sections behind the ears or areas that refuse to part naturally.
2. Trap and Pull Mechanism: Hair strands can behave like interconnected railroad tracks, catching and directing each other. This interconnectedness can lead to hair trapping other strands in unwanted directions, creating a feeling of heaviness or misaligned movement. The hair seems to have a built-in tendency to move together, which can be beneficial for styling cohesion but problematic when it creates unwanted weight or volume in specific areas.
3. Imbalanced Flow and Awkward Separation: Like turbulent water that cannot settle smoothly, hair can clump, part awkwardly, or create visible blocks of volume that disrupt the flow of the overall style.    3. **底層（ロックボトム）**: これは基盤となる層で、川の底にある岩の上を流れる水に似ています。最も乱れた流動になていて、不規則な形状、ねじれ、曲がり、ブロックがあり、それが上の層の流れに影響を与えます。この層には、奇妙な角度で生えている髪、カウリック、そして上の層の動作を決定することが多い密な部分が含まれます。

   **髪の動きにおける課題**

   1. **毛量の蓄積**: 岩が水の流れを妨げるように、特定の密な髪の部分も障害物として作用し、望ましい動きを妨げます。これが耳の後ろや自然に分かれない部分に現れることがよくあります。

   2. **トラップと引っ張りのメカニズム**: 髪の束は相互に接続された鉄道のレールのように振る舞い、互いに捕らえ合い、方向を導きます。この相互関係により、髪の束が他の束を望ましくない方向に引っ張ることがあり、重さや不均衡な動きが生じることがあります。髪が一緒に動こうとする傾向があり、スタイリングの統一感には役立ちますが、特定の部分で不要な重さやボリュームを作ると問題になります。

   3. **不均衡な流れと不自然な分け目**: 乱流の水がスムーズに落ち着かないように、髪も固まり、分かれ目が不自然に見えたり、全体のスタイルの流れを乱すボリュームのブロックを作ることがあります。この現象は、自然な毛流れのパターンがスタイリングの意図するところと衝突する部分で、例えば頑固なカウリックや分け目の上に浮かぶかさばる部分で特に目立ちます。

Approaches to Harmonize Hair Movement

1. Layer Adjustment and Texturizing: The key is to refine each layer’s role, creating a harmonious flow from the bottom up. Texturizing strategically in the mid and surface layers can help alleviate the burden of the bulk below. By softening the density without over-thinning, you can reduce the pulling effect that causes unevenness and block-like sensations.
2. Redirecting the Bottom Layer: Since the bottom layer significantly influences the rest, focusing on adjusting its behavior can lead to more natural movement above. Techniques like slide cutting or carving allow you to gently redirect the growth pattern of the bottom layer, minimizing its disruptive effects on the upper sections.
3. Controlled Over-Direction: When cutting, deliberately over-direct sections to balance volume and shift weight where it’s needed. By manipulating how hair falls in relation to growth patterns, you can manage where bulk accumulates and guide the overall flow. This approach is crucial in areas like behind the ear, where natural growth often creates undesired bulking.
4. Strategic Cutting Angles: Employ cutting angles that respect the natural flow direction of each layer but subtly alter it to promote cohesion. Using angled or vertical slicing near areas prone to bulk can help channel hair movement more fluidly, similar to how altering a riverbed’s shape can direct water flow more smoothly.

Conclusion

By understanding hair as a dynamic, multi-layered system with inherent movement patterns influenced by underlying “rock bottom” disturbances, we can better address challenges like bulk, awkward parting, and uneven flow. The goal is to work with these natural tendencies, redirecting and refining each layer’s contribution to create a balanced, fluid hair design that feels light, manageable, and harmonious.

**髪の動きを調和させるアプローチ**

1. **層の調整とテクスチャリング**: 各層の役割を洗練し、下から上への調和の取れた流れを作ることが鍵です。中間層と表面層で戦略的にテクスチャリングを行うことで、下の層の重さを軽減する手助けができます。過度に薄くすることなく密度を和らげることで、不均一感やブロック状の感覚を引き起こす引っ張り効果を減らすことができます。

2. **底層のリダイレクション**: 底層が全体に大きな影響を与えるため、その方向を調整することで上層により自然な動きを得ることができます。スライドカットやカービングなどの技術を使って、底層の毛流パターンを優しくリダイレクトし、上の層に対する乱れを最小限に抑えることができます。

3. **コントロールされたオーバーダイレクション**: カットする際には、意図的にセクションをオーバーダイレクトしてボリュームのバランスを取り、必要な場所に重さをシフトさせます。髪が毛流パターンに対してどのように落ちるかを操作することで、髪の厚みがどこに蓄積するかを見極め、全体の流れを導くことができます。このアプローチは、耳の後ろなどの自然な成長がしばしば望ましくないボリュームを作る場所で重要です。

4. **戦略的なカット角度**: 各層の自然な流れの方向を尊重しながら、わずかに調整して調和を促進するカット角度を使用します。ボリュームが発生しやすい場所での角度や垂直スライスを使用することで、髪の動きをよりスムーズに導くことができます。これは、川床の形を変えることで水の流れをよりスムーズに導くのと同様です。

**結論**

髪を動的で多層的なシステムとして理解し、基盤となる「ロックボトム」の乱れに影響された動きパターンを考慮することで、多毛、不自然な分け目、そして不均一な流れなどの課題により良く対処することができます。自然な流れを理解し、それに合わせて各層の関係性を変化させ、洗練することで、軽く、まとまりやすく、再現力の高い髪のデザインを作り上げることが目標です。
